The Ford Ranger vs. Toyota Tacoma

The 2019 Ford Ranger is often compared to the Toyota Tacoma as another rugged truck that's capabilities make it known for off-road adventures.  But the 2019 Ford Ranger has made a comeback as a midsized truck rather than a compact.  We want to ensure that you are getting a truck that is best for your lifestyle so here is a comparison between these two trucks, so you can get a better idea of what to expect from each and where the Ford Ranger can give you more.

Performance and Capability

The 2019 Ford Ranger comes with a powertrain combination of a 2.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque when paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.  Rear-wheel drive is standard while a 4-wheel drive with 4Hi and 4Lo settings are optional.  Maximum towing for the Ford Ranger is 7,500 pounds with the payload ranging from 1,560 pounds to 1,860 pounds depending on cab and drivetrain.

The 2019 Tacoma comes standard with a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine with 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque when paired with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission.  The Tacoma also comes standard with rear-wheel drive with a 4WD system featuring high and low gearing.  The Tacoma's towing capacity is between 6,400 pounds and 6,800 pounds with a payload between 1,120 pounds and 1,620 pounds depending on cab, bed length, and drivetrain.

Fuel Economy

The Ford Ranger is overall more fuel efficient.  It's estimated to get 21 miles per gallon in the city and 26 miles per gallon on the highways with a combined driving range of 23 miles per gallon.  The Ranger 4WD gets 20 miles per gallon, city and 24 miles per gallon, highways.

The 4-cylinder Tacoma gets you 19 miles per gallon city and 23 miles per gallon highway with an average 21 miles per gallon combined.

Both trucks have prioritized safety features.  Both include forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking.  Lane-keeping assist is standard on the Tacoma but is available on the Ranger XLT and above models, as well as blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic warning systems.  These are optional on the Tacoma trim levels.

Body and Design

The 2019 Ranger offers two body styles: the extended SuperCab with a 72.8-inch bed and the SuperCrew cab with a shorter bed that is 61 inches.  The Tacoma offers two beds as well.  The extended Access cab and crew-type Double Cab.  The shorter bed is 60.5 inches, which is standard, and a long bed that is 73.7 inches which is options with the Double Cab and standard with the Access cab.

If you are looking for a more spacious cabin then the Ford Ranger is a better fit with a roomier interior and comfortable back seats as well as adjustable height options for the driver which is not included in the Tacoma.  The Ranger also uses higher quality materials.

The base Ranger XL is overall less expensive than the Toyota Tacoma.  The base Tacoma is about $25,000 while the Ranger XL SuperCab comes in at around $24,000.  You'll get a better powertrain, bigger interior, and more comfort for less!
